BTux is a light-weight GNU/Linux distribution, based on LFS/BLFS and using Debian packaging technology. It is typically installed on a 128MB Compact Flash disk-on-chip, and provides a wealth of services with no compromise on features and quality (see BtuxPackages).

BTux is not a stringent embedded distribution: it does not support real time extensions, uses glibc and not uclibc, and requires an MMU.

  • Images: due to formatting constraint for CF cards, we cannot offer a generic CF image. There is no CD-ROM or USB key image yet.

Hardware

BTux currently targets x86 compatible platforms (AMD, Intel, VIA), and a restricted set of dedicated hardware platforms having a CF as primary hard drive. We maintain a BtuxHardware catalog for your convenience.

Note that adding support for new hardware is most of the time a matter of consulting the general Linux kernel hardware support map, adusting the compilation settings and building a custom image. See BtuxHacking.

You can use the tracker to submit bugs or suggestions. A mailing list is available to chat with the BTux community, and most maintainers will hang around the #btux IRC channel on freenode.net.

License

BTux is primarily a set of scripts and tools to help build and maintain a GNU/Linux distribution: this set is distributed under the terms of the GPL license.

All software currently packaged for BTux have their own license. We take great care to pick only Free Software, and preferably those with GPL-compatible license. Exceptions to this rule will be cleary notified in the software package information.
